 Since Hummingbirds were still in short supply at Ash Canyon, a few days later I paid a visit to Patagonia, where they always have a number of birds that we don't get, at least not often.  I was surprised to find that they also had removed all their non-Hummingbird feeders, likely to help stop the spread of avian pox,  However, they had increased the number of Hummingbird feeders.  It was worth the trip down.

 When I arrived , there were already three cars in the parking area, so I knew this would be a more social day than last visit.  Not long after getting there, a woman approached me and said there was a Diamondback Rattlesnake near the water feature along the main path.  I went with her to check it out while she told me the snake had crawled under her bench on his way to the rocky water feature.  She was alerted by numerous birds gathering around the area and chirping like crazy.  The woman said she is from Denver, but grew up in Tucson, pointing out she had never seen snakes in Tucson, but sees them frequently in Colorado.  Our snake was partially hidden, so these are the best photos I could get. Ash Canyon - October 7, 2025

 I knew something special was up when I arrived and found only one vacant parking space.  Inside, at the big blind, it was standing room only and there was an air of excitement.  Someone explained that a Ruby-throated Hummingbird was reported yesterday, so the crowd here today was waiting and hoping it would return.  Sure enough, the young male appeared and thrilled the observers.  This was only the tenth Ruby-throat ever reported in our area. Ruby-throats mostly winter in Central America, then migrate to North America for breeding, as far north as Canada.  Many of them migrate by flying directly across the Gulf of America/Mexico, a journey of 500-600 miles and 20-24 hours non-stop, with no place to rest or get food/water.  They will often "bulk up" to prepare for that arduous trip.  Others fly a longer, but easier, route around the Gulf.  At the end of summer, they repeat the migration, except heading south  My theory is that our visito...

Ash Canyon - October 27, 2025

 It was a beautiful morning in the canyon, and a nice variety of birds were present to share it.  I really enjoyed seeing the Northern Flicker.  Not only is it a beautiful bird, but it was my nemesis for many years.  At one time, I felt that that I would never get a good photo of one.  Now I have one coming to me and posing so very nicely.  Also, the hybrid White-ear x Broad-tail was still in the canyon at this time.
