Explore.org Images

 Explore.org is a wildlife organization that posts videos from all over the world on the internet.  Last fall, they installed two cameras on the grounds of Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary, providing live views of activity twenty-four hours a day.  Since bird activity has been below normal in recent weeks, I decided to share with you some archived photos from the Explore.com cameras.  

One reason for slow bird activity is that most feeders have been temporarily removed due to ongoing bear damage.  Now that we have started getting summer rains, we're hoping the bears will have plenty of food and water in the woods and won't be drawn to the sanctuary's feeders.

Nearby Ramsey Canyon has several popular birding sites, but is also a place that attracts local hikers and bikers.  Recently, some folks walking the road happened to spot a Mountain Lion hiding in the brush beside the road.  This is their photo.

Finally, if you are interested in Southern Arizona wildlife, check out Jason Miller Outdoors on YouTube.  His trail cams have captured some special images of many species, including Jaguar, Ocelot, Bobcat, Coati Mundi, Ringtail Cats, etc.

 When I arrived , there were already three cars in the parking area, so I knew this would be a more social day than last visit.  Not long after getting there, a woman approached me and said there was a Diamondback Rattlesnake near the water feature along the main path.  I went with her to check it out while she told me the snake had crawled under her bench on his way to the rocky water feature.  She was alerted by numerous birds gathering around the area and chirping like crazy.  The woman said she is from Denver, but grew up in Tucson, pointing out she had never seen snakes in Tucson, but sees them frequently in Colorado.  Our snake was partially hidden, so these are the best photos I could get. Ash Canyon - August 9, 2025

 The number of hummingbirds at the sanctuary has increased once again, including three species I had not seen so far this year.  Word has obviously gotten out, and the people are here in droves, bolstered by a group tour from the Tucson Birding Festival sponsored each year by the Audubon Society.  It was so crowded, in fact, that there were no empty seats in the main area when I arrived.  Since I was told the Rivoli's has started appearing daily, I went first to the "lower yard" where I've seen it in past years.  Unfortunately, that area is very shady, making it more of a challenge to get good photos.When it comes to such a special bird, I figure a poor photo is better than no photo. Ash Canyon - July 29, 2025

 With so many Hummingbirds at the sanctuary right now, my main goal for this day was to get good shots of a variety of species, both in flight and on natural perches, rather than feeders.  I also wanted to get photos with good backgrounds, rather than those cluttered with branches or man-made objects.  I think I was somewhat successful, although there is always room for improvement.
