Ash Canyon, Ramsey Canyon - August 18, 2023

The hummingbirds were really swarming today at Ash Canyon.  I don't think I have ever seen quite so many there.  The Plain-capped Starthroat did not make an appearance while I was there, but a volunteer reported he had been there earlier. Although the managers are still not putting out feed for the other birds, there were a few notable varieties around.  It felt great to be able to leave home, so I visited the local canyons every chance I got.  This is a great time of year for hummingbirds, so the photos mostly show them.  While Ramsey Canyon has a much greater variety of birds, I was unable to take advantage of that due to the steep trail required to see most of them.  Instead, I hung around the visitor center where the hummingbird feeders are located.  Once again, I visited Ramsey Canyon on the way home from Ash Canyon.  Not only do they get a few birds that don't go to Ash Canyon, the slightly higher altitude and large trees there make for a very pleasant spot.  Temperatures run 8-10 degrees cooler than Sierra Vista.
