Ash Canyon - February 14, 2024

Image
The situation had not changed much since my previous visit.  The regular birds were there in large numbers, but we're still waiting for some of the spring arrivals.  You'll notice a male House Finch with yellow coloration where it would normally be red.  I learned that it's related to diet, and the more of a certain kind of nutrient the bird eats, the redder his head and breast will be.   Bewick's Wren Bewick's Wren Pyrrhuloxia (M) Pyrrhuloxia (M) Chipping Sparrow Chipping Sparrow Bridled Titmouse Mexican Jay Acorn Woodpecker Orange-crowned Warbler Orange-crowned Warbler Yellow-rumped Warbler Yellow-rumped Warbler House Finch (M) House Finch (F) House Finch (M) House Finch (M) Lesser Goldfinch (M) Lesser Goldfinch (F)

Ash Canyon - February 10, 2024

When we got a little snow Saturday morning, I decided to visit Ash Canyon in hopes of getting some mountain photos, as well as some shots of birds with snow in the scene.  The mountains were nicely covered, obviously more snow because of the altitude.  There weren't many birds out, and I didn't stay long, but I got a few photos that maybe worth sharing. San Pedro House - February 1, 2024

Leaving home, I noticed an interesting cloud formation hanging over the Huachuca's this morning. Then, before I got out of the neighborhood, a Cooper's Hawk perched atop a light standard caught my attention.  The scene at San Pedro House was much the same as I'd been seeing at Ash Canyon, lots of birds but not many species.  It only took about an hour to see and photograph all that was available.  Red-winged Blackbird (F) Red-winged Blackbird (F) House Finch (M) House Finch (M) House Finch (F) Pyrrhuloxia (M) Pyrrhuloxia (M) Pyrrhuloxia (F) Gila Woodpecker (M) Gila Woodpecker (M) Gila Woodpecker (F) Gila Woodpecker (F) Canyon Towhee Canyon Towhee Abert's Towhee Abert's Towhee Northern Cardinal (F) Northern Cardinal (F) White-crowned Sparrow White-crowned Sparrow
