Ash Canyon -- April 2, 2025

 It was a chilly morning, around 48 degrees when I left home, but I wanted to go out anyway.  At the canyon, it was 45 degrees and quite windy, around 15-20 mph.  The wind made it very uncomfortable, but it hadn't discouraged the birds.  There was a lot of bird activity, and as it turned out, plenty of people were there also.  No doubt that was due to recent reports of birds returning from migration, including several species of hummingbirds.  There was so much chatter among the visitors that it was hard to find a spot and just concentrate on photography.  It all proved to be worth it, however.  After moving around to several different locations, I finally opted to go to the enclosed blind, even though it hasn't been very active lately.  At least it protected me from the wind, and there were actually quite a few birds there.

 For a change, I decided to visit San Pedro House and arrived before 7 am.  Apparently this was too early because there were almost no birds around, particularly none around the feeders.  Obviously, the volunteers had not yet arrived to put out the feed that brings in the birds.  It's clear the birds are smarter than I am.  So, I could either wait a while or go elsewhere.  Since I was wearing only shorts and a tee-shirt, and the wind was somewhat chilly at 59 F, I decided to go to Ramsey Canyon.  Along the way, I explored a couple side roads and found a few birds willing to pose. Ash Canyon - August 19, 2024

 The hummers were out in force again today, buzzing around like crazy.  Flitting from feeders to trees and back again, chasing each other like the feeders might run out any minute.  There were quite a few people there also, likely the word has gotten out about some of the less common species visiting the sanctuary right now.  The parking lot was full, with plates from CA, FL, AK and OR along with local cars.  Again, very few birds other than hummingbirds, and I hope you're not tiring of them. Sierra Vista, Ash Canyon, Ramsey Canyon - June 4-12, 2023

 Notice the damaged beak on the House Finch.  I've seen him before and he seems to do all right despite the bad beak.  I don't know if the damage is the result of disease or injury.  I always feel bad for animals with some type of disability, but they seem to adapt much better than we humans. I managed to get out a couple nights to capture some nice sunsets.  These were my first sunset photos in many months.
