Madera Canyon - September 14, 2023
Madera Canyon is one of my favorite birding locations, but it is 114 miles away, if you stay on paved roads. I always cut through Box Canyon, which involves an unpaved road that is rough in places with steep drop offs. This route is only about 60 miles but takes almost as much time. Not only is Box Canyon scenic and fun to drive, there is also birding opportunity if you take the time. Once in Madera Canyon, I went straight to Santa Rita Lodge, where feeders bring in lots of birds. Unfortunately, early in the day, sunlight doesn't reach the entire feeder area, so I stayed near a couple hummingbird feeders in good light. Also, I was able to get a desirable dark background most of the time.

This next series highlights the beautiful Broad-billed males.
The Rivoli's hummingbird, formerly the more appropriate Magnificent, has special coloring when seen in the right light. Unfortunately, I was unable to capture these in the best light, but you can see the potential. I will continue trying to get better images of this wonderful bird.
