There are a number of lakes near Flagstaff, which I naturally had to visit. I was surprised to learn there are only two natural lakes in Arizona, Mormon Lake being the larger. Near it, Lower Lake Mary, Lake Mary, Ashurst Lake and Lake Marshall are all listed as birding hotspots. Unfortunately , waterfowl stay primarily on the far side of the lakes.
On my first visit to Mormon Lake, I saw something strange too far away for me to make out what it was. I took a photo and left. Looking at the photo on computer, I could see it was a herd of elk. I knew I would have to go back and look for them.
On my second visit, I got photos of more birds, although many were really too distant for good shots. The elk were also back in that same spot, making it impossible for me to get close-ups. They were just lying on the ground until a nearby gun shot caused them to start moving. They didn't go far, then settled down into grazing mode. I waited for a nice sunset.
