Santa Rita Lodge is a popular spot for birders in Madera Canyon, located on the western side of the Santa Rita Mountains. From Sierra Vista, it's a drive of about 60 miles (1.5 hours) if one is willing to drive the dirt road through Box Canyon. To stay on paved roads means a drive of 95 miles, or 1 hour and 45 minutes. Either way, it's a rewarding destination due to the variety of birds, some of which are seldom seen elsewhere in the U.S. In addition to its primary business, the lodge has a store/gift shop/viewing area where they allow the public to visit without charge. Feeders ensure an ample supply and variety of birds.
Beyond the lodge, Madera Canyon has numerous pull-outs, picnic areas and hiking trails to view wildlife that may not be attracted to feeders. The elegant trogon is a species that lives primarily in Mexico, but visits this area. This beautiful bird attracts birders from all over the country.

Madera Canyon itself is a beautiful area to visit. A seasonal stream not only supports the wildlife, but also lush vegetation. The Arizona Sycamore trees are the ideal habitat for many of the birds found here. Several B & Bs offer lodging, with bird feeders to accommodate the many birders who visit.
